Manual Lymphatic Drainage, Cambridge
Carol is an experienced practitioner of manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) and trained with Hildegard Wittlinger of the Dr Vodder School in Austria. Although treatments for lymphoedema figure largely in her work, she uses MLD for many different conditions such as sinusitis, headaches and migranes, scarring, recovery after injuries and operations, swollen ankle, puffy eyes, fibromyalgia, skin disorders and for pain reduction.
Manual lymphatic drainage is a specialised massage of precise, light hand movements which gently stretch the skin in a circular motion along the lymphatic pathways. This pumping technique helps to stimulate the contractions of the lymphatic vessels toward the lymph nodes. In addition, the slow, rhythmical nature of the technique appears to have a calming effect on the nervous system and is therefore relaxing and useful in alleviating pain.
For 10 years Carol co-ran a lymphoedema clinic for breast cancer patients at the Cancerkin Centre based at the Royal Free Hospital, London. As a member of MLDuk, the British Lymphology Society and the Lymphoedema Support Network, she continues to update her training and has attended review courses with the Foeldi Clinic in Germany and the UK.
